What are the benefits of a DirecTV DVR with Tivo over other digital video recording systems?

Let's start with a brief review of what Tivo and DirecTV DVRs are and what their benefits are, then compare this to what other digital video recording systems (DVRs) offer.

First of all, Tivo is a service, with smart, automatic recording features that, combined with a DVR (Digital Video Recorder, which is like a VCR, but with a hard drive instead of videotapes (among other features)) gives you 35 to 240* hours of the most advanced and easy to use television viewing and recording options available today.

The DirecTV DVR with Tivo is a new DirecTV receiver that combines DirecTV satellite service with Tivo service into one integrated product (i.e. in one box).

The Benefits of DirecTV DVRs and Tivo include

  • The ability to automatically record every episode of your favorite shows every time they are on, even if the date and time slot changes!
  • Pause live TV, rewind, create instant replays or watch in slow motion.
  • Watch one show and record another or record two shows at once (requires connection of two satellite inputs from a dual LNB DirecTV System dish).
  • 35 hours (or more) of digital recording* without tapes!
  • Search, find and automatically record what you like such as shows that feature your favorite actors, teams, hobbies or topics of interest to you.

Additional Tivo updates and information:

TiVo works with cable, satellite and even antenna. Tivo can also be setup to work with existing VCRs and DVD players. Many Tivo DVRs can record up to 240 hours worth of material, but this is mostly dependent on the size of the hard drive and is being upgraded daily...

Tivo Digital Video Recorders (DVRs) are also compatible with most DISH network receivers. If your satellite receiver supports IR control (most do), Tivo should work with your satellite TV service. However, if you have a receiver that does not support IR control, your Tivo DVR will not be able to change channels to record shows.

Other Digital Video Recording systems (DVRs)

There are some alternatives to DirecTV DVRs with TiVo or even DVRs without the Tivo service but, at this time, they are really not as robust as Tivo.

There are some advantages to the Dish Network Personal Video Recorder (PVR) for example.

The Dish Network Personal Video Recorder (PVR) has great picture quality, surround sound, up to 35 hours of storage, the ability to replay live TV and is available as a stand-alone PVR or can come integrated with a satellite TV receiver.

One of the biggest advantages with the Dish Net PVR is that you do not have the monthly service fee as you do with TiVo (in most cases).
